  • This is worth making my first post for!

Hello everyone - I've been waiting to post until I had something worthwhile to say and now I have :)

Just saw a fantastic link on Twitter for an idea of how to grow veggies and herbs using hydroponics in a window space

    http://our.windowfarms.org/

They call it a window farm.

I've checked the link out and it isn't a selling type thingy just lots of great info on how to make your own window farm out of bits and bobs.
Maybe there is a part where they sell you stuff to make it easier - but if there is I didn't notice it.

It looks like a great way to re-use plastic bottles.

  • Pumpkins

Isnt it annoying that these wonderful veggies only seem to be sold one week per year.

I noticed a post on another eco thread recently ranting about the waste and how parents buy pumpkins only to make lanterns for their children and chuck the inside and seeds away.

Pumpkins contain more vitamin c than you will find in your average bowl of fruit, they are full of zinc and the seeds eaten often have aphrodisiac qualities working wonders on the luuurrrrrrrvvvv life.

So why are they only on sale in supermarkets for one week per year and why do so many people only use them as lanterns on Halloween?

    What a waste?

Pumpkin soup is just the best, roasted pumpkin chips or pumpkin pie totaly delicious, why waste them for halloween.

If there is anything left once iv cut out all the insides, dried all the seeds for roasting and snacking on then i might make a lantern.

I wonder just how many pumpkins were totaly wasted last weekend, sad isnt it.

I hoped to order one in my tesco delivery shop this week, but heyho! No sign of this most delicious, versitile and health boosting veg in site.

Will have a look round town tomorrow. How many here grow their own? I hear they are easy to grow.

A pumpkin is for life, not just halloween

  • replacing ancient woodland

    http://wtcampaigns.wordpress.com/2009/10/20/coal-causes-controversy/

Im sorry, but how can one replace ancient woodland? All we have ever seen so far is woodland being replaced by non-native fast growing trees that are only replaced in the first place for man to use for his own use in so called 'sustainable wood' for use in the many wood burning power stations sprouting up all over the country these days.

It makes me so angry to hear of these beautiful old ancient trees to be sold off in such a way.

How could someone replace something as beautiful as this

    Or this

    or this

We need to protect our trees

  • one for the ladies....

    ..... feminime hygiene products.

When we think about the amount that are sold in this country alone its pretty frightening thinking how many of these used products end up in landfill sites or even worse, flused down the toilet to end up washed ashore on our beaches.

3 years ago i decided to try the mooncup and have never looked back. Not only is it better for our environment, healthier for our bodies but iv worked it out that iv saved a massive saving of...

    DRUM ROLL

    £32.50 per year.

(calculations based on an average pack of tampons from Tesco)

OK, so £32.50 per year dosnt sound a lot but it could be the price of a pair of shoes, gig tickets, a nice meal out in an average kind of resturant, an item of clothing you would like, some nice impulse buy in a sale, a trip to the cinema, some make up, getting your nails done etc....

So, in the 3 years iv been using mine (and its never needed replacing yet) iv saved...

    DRUM ROLL

    £97.50

But the true cost is to the planet.

Mooncups, do look em up, i wouldnt be without mine.

  • Recycling

Ok when I announced to the family that I had become involved with this blog, my mum thrust a pamphlet into my hands and said, 'READ THIS and tell me what I need to do' :)) it seems my local council has caught up with the rest of the world and decided that everything should be recycled, yeyeye however it's more complicated than that.... *sigh*

It now involves breaking down the products that would normally be put in the bins into their components... therefore...

a ciggie packet for instance, the cardboard would go into one box, the plastic wrapper into another, the foil into another 8| that's just for starters.

fitness equipment, they won't take it they suggest we donate to local schools..... that's fine however what happens when it breaks? do we break it down into it's components then?

It's very complicated involving bags and boxes dotted around the house, there is a list which I'll type up for you all if you wish and what is suggested we do with it all, no wonder mum was confused!!!!

So aye I am now cheif waste monitor for the house... a job I take on board however it's going to give me abit of headache until we get used to it all!

What is everyone else's thoughts on recycling and the councils ideas of how to do it?

  • incinerators

These dreadful things are turning up all over the place these days. They cause massive amounts of air pollution. Incinerators are not the way forward and it is clear the public do not want them.

A new one is being planned for St Dennis in Cornwall. This petition was on the friends of the Earth forum today.

    http://www.ecopetitions.org/index.php/component/petitions/?view=petition&id=2

Whats your thoughts on this? Have you been involved in campaigning against plans to build one in your area? Do you live near one, if so how does it affect you and your community?

  • It's 350 day today

    http://www.350.org/

"On 24 October, people in 181 countries are coming together for the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history. At over 5200 events around the world, people are gathering to call for strong action and bold leadership on the climate crisis"

Perhaps there is an event near you!
